Your Team Captain Speaks

As the 2006-2007 President of Quota International of Santa Maria, I am following in the footsteps of some of the most positive, loving and involved women I have ever known. These women, all of whom I met the same year our club chartered, have helped me evolve into the women I am today. They have helped me see that I can be comfortable with myself and that my opinions and ideas are important. They have helped me “out of my shell” and to get over the shyness that has plagued me for most of my life. They have, along with all of the other members (current and past), become good friends that I have come to depend on, in good times and bad. I have chosen the theme “Go Beyond” for my Presidency to reflect what Quota and its members has taught me in the last seven years… we can always go beyond where we are, be it in actions or thoughts. Working with Quota has made me see beyond myself and know the joy of working for others in a hands-on environment. Come and join the fun!!!!! Susan Gotz President
Editor's Note Today I’ve been reflecting on my year as Governor of District 33as I was putting the finishing touches on my report to the international staff. If I focus just on my Quota duties, I do the office a disservice. Being a part of Quota’ s administration meant I was going to touch people’s lives. This is a tremendous responsibility and can be overwhelming, but with a smile on my face and laughter in my heart I took on that task with relish. Then life got in the way and you with your club members touched me and overwhelmed me with your caring and support. I took the office intending to be the leader you needed me to be, but you led me through some dark times that were unusual in my sheltered happy life. I was to care for you, lead you, guide you and I did that, but in turn got so much more. The time for club visits came and meant more than I could tell you. I needed the connection to you more than you needed what I was to share with you. I did the sharing. I followed the rules of protocol. I sold you pins. You shared with me your inspiration, your profound sense of community, and your commitment to each other. You shared with me the desire to survive and prevail over all. You pocketed problems, adversity, and your own dark places to rise up, shelter, and comfort each other. You giggled. You glowed. You infected each other with encouragement and insight. You did this while unknowingly melting over me when I needed it the most. District conference last month was the curtain call for my year. I had a fabulous day and it culminated in receiving a huge adorable glass penguin from you all. I love penguins because they represent black and white structure and order. My life and thinking lives in shades of gray. Penguins remind me both extremes can live together right along with my grays. Sitting on my desk, she is a testament that I succeeded. I thank you. It was an honor to be your Governor. It is an honor to know you. Sincerely, Vicki L. Conable
